Publisher: Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group

During those days, most of what I learned about homosexuality I found in literature, such as Gore Vidal's book, “The City and the Pillar,” which ironically was published about the same time I was born. In 1948, his novel The City and the Pillar, with its overtly homoerotic theme, was pilloried by The New York Times. Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at College of the Desert In 1947, Gore Vidal sent a copy of his soon-to-be-published novel, The City and the Pillar, to a number of established writers. "I have begun writing what I have said I'd never write, a memoir ('I am not my own subject,' I used to say with icy superiority)." From the Preface to Gore Vidal's The City and the Pillar and Seven Early Stories. Gore Vidal is an author, playwright, screenwriter and political activist with an estimated net worth with $12. The City knew it was time to upgrade an old, dilapidated, unsafe above ground park but funds were limited and resources were tight. Christopher Isherwood was one of them. (Originally published in 1948). The New York Times refused to review his next five books. To make a living, Vidal started writing for television, theater and film. He wrote his first novel at 19 while serving in the Army during World War II. €The City and the Pillar”, Vintage Books Reprint, 1995. His first success, though, was his third novel, "The City and The Pillar," published in 1948. Like any self-respecting American who considers himself even the slightest but literarily inclined, I was already a fan of Vidal's work. That 1948 novel, The City and the Pillar, was dedicated to Jimmie Trimble. Sometimes recalls aloud — just as I repeat back to him — the epigraph of Gore Vidal's great novel about youth and loss, The City and the Pillar. Its main character, Jim Willard, is an open homosexual who serves in World War II. The City and the Pillar was the first gay novel that I read, unaware that it had practically killed his career in the 1950s, forcing him to work under pseudonyms. His literary talents were prodigious, though he scandalized the elites early in his career by writing a novel openly celebrating homosexuality.
